Windsor was not incorporated as a town until July of 1992. It experienced an economic boom when housing dramatically grew. Beforehand, Windsor was considered “unincorporated Sonoma County.” Since then, Windsor has hosted annual events such as Earth Day and Wellness Festival, Windsor Days Parade, Cinco de Mayo Festival, and Community Art and Flower Show. Everyone can enjoy the live music, recreational classes, event information booths, food vendors and produce from the Windsor Farmers’ Market.
The Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa is on the border of Windsor. The airport offers flights to Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix-Mesa. It is also home to the "Wings over Wine Country Air Show," which is the largest air show in the North Bay and attracts over 25,000 visitors.
Windsor is home to two high schools: Windsor High School and Windsor Oaks Academy. There are seven elementary schools, including a charter school, private school, and special education needs school. Higher education facilities near Windsor include Empire College, Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University.
