This quaint city is just 50 miles north of San Francisco, eight miles from Santa Rosa and just 20 minutes to the Pacific Coast. With concerts in the plaza, open artist studios, art events and performances, Sebastopol offers a creative and vibrant community and represents the artistic side of West Sonoma County. Sebastopol hosts two art studio tours each year, Art at the Source and Sonoma County Art Trails. Local residents also enjoy the annual Sculpture Jam, which showcases art created from recycled materials.

With housing options ranging from 100-year old craftsman bungalows and farmhouses, to modern subdivisions, apartments and condominiums, Sebastopol offers a diverse amount. Because Sebastopol is surrounded by countryside, it is common for residents to own vineyards, apple orchards, redwoods and streams. Home prices and rental rates lean toward the higher side compared to some other areas in Sonoma County, averaging around $850,000 for June of this year.

Public schools in the Sebastopol’s region remain among the highest in the area based on student achievement and very strong community and parent support. Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm is well known for having a working farm on the same campus as the school. The farm produces fruits, vegetables and flowers while living students the opportunity to learn basic skills. Each grade has specific responsibilities to the farm such as garden work, maintaining compost bins and sustainable agriculture.

 

Sebastopol is well-known for producing the majority of the world’s supply of Gravenstein apples. In the 21st century, the region has increased in popularity for growing grapes for high quality wines. One of Sebastopol’s biggest events of the year is held in April called the Apple Blossom Festival, which is a two-day event that pays tribute to “everyone’s favorite fruit.”

Sebastopol is ranked among the safest cities in Northern California due to its very low crime rate. With five Council members elected at-large, Sebastopol has a Council-Manager form of government. It has its own Police, Public Works and Fire departments.
